Thriving Kids is a new national program designed to support children 8 years and under with low to moderate developmental delay or autism. It will provide early help through community and health services, rather than through the NDIS. The Australian Government and all states and territories have agreed to jointly fund this new approach.
Is the program delayed?
Right now, Thriving Kids is not deferred. The most recent government updates confirm that rollout is still planned to begin on 1 October 2026, with full implementation by 1 January 2028
Why is this program being introduced?
Thriving Kids is part of a major reform to strengthen Australia’s disability and early childhood systems. The government’s aim is to:
- Give families earlier, easier access to support
- Reduce long wait times
- Strengthen mainstream systems like health, early childhood education, and community programs
- Keep the NDIS focused on children with significant or permanent disability
Will my child still be eligible for the NDIS?
Children with high support needs or significant disability will continue to be eligible for the NDIS under the usual rules. For children who have milder, early developmental needs, Thriving Kids will become the main support pathway once it launches.
